Night sweats and 3 am: staying steady (what breathing can and can’t do)

Hot, then wet, then cold.

Covers off. Covers on.

By the time it passes, she’s wide awake.

A woman sitting up in an armchair at night under a blanket, a small lamp beside her.

The honest part first

Breathing won’t switch a flash off.

The Menopause Society looked at the research in 2023. It does not recommend paced breathing to cut hot flashes.

Two trials found it no better than ordinary breathing.

What breathing can do

Most hot flashes at night come with a waking. The heat passes. The wide-awake part is what’s left.

Slow breathing calms a racing body.

It won’t switch a flash off. It helps her stay steady while it passes, so panic doesn’t ride on top of the heat.

In the moment

  1. Push the covers off the feet. Leave the light off.
  2. While it’s hot: in for 4, out for 6, slow.
  3. Once the heat goes: out longer than in. In 4, hold 2, out 7.
  4. Still awake? Get up, somewhere dim, and come back when the eyes are heavy.

What to ask a doctor about

HRT works on the hormones. Whether it suits you is a talk to have with your doctor.

Without hormones, it recommends CBT and clinical hypnosis.
